At Nelson Skin Doctors, we believe that skin cancer awareness shouldn't stop at the clinic door. That's why we recently hosted two education evenings for some of the most valuable — and often overlooked — eyes in our community: including hairdressers, beauty therapists, massage therapists, and tattoo artists. These are professionals who spend their days up close with people's skin. They notice things. And with the right knowledge, they can play a genuinely life-saving role in helping to spot potential skin cancers early. The response to our invitation was so strong that we ran a second session the following week to make sure nobody missed out. We were blown away by the enthusiasm and engagement from everyone who attended — it's clear that our community deeply cares about the health and wellbeing of the people they work with every day. The evenings covered how to recognise the early warning signs of skin cancer, what to look out for, and — crucially — what to do if something doesn't look quite right. Knowing when to refer someone to a professional for a closer look can make all the difference. In New Zealand, where we have some of the highest rates of skin cancer and melanoma in the world, that knowledge is powerful. We are so proud of the Nelson Tasman community for showing up, asking great questions, and taking this seriously. Early detection saves lives — and it truly does take a village. Could we come and talk to your group? We'd love to share this knowledge further. If you're part of a community group, professional association, or workplace that would benefit from an education evening on skin cancer awareness, we'd be delighted to hear from you.
