Katie and Arwen recently participated in the Cancer Education and Prevention Hauora Expo at the Victory Community Centre organised by the Nelson Cancer Society. The event brought together diverse communities, health professionals, and interpreters to enable important conversations about cancer prevention, screening, and wellbeing.
We set up an information display and delivered presentations to different refugee groups, with interpreters ensuring everyone could participate. The event brought together people from diverse backgrounds, with interpreters speaking Nepali, Chin, Hakha, Zomi, Karenni, and Spanish. The genuine interest from attendees was encouraging, with thoughtful questions and discussions about New Zealand's harsh sun, the importance of sun protection and recognising spots that might need attention. Other health professionals discussed various cancer screenings, including a memorable walk-through inflatable intestine for bowel cancer awareness. We found the experience both enjoyable and meaningful. The Nelson Cancer Society did excellent work organizing this community outreach, and we look forward to participating in their future initiatives. If your community group would like to learn about skin cancer prevention and early detection too, we're always happy to help spread this important message. Get in touch today. Comments are closed.
